My recipe for life:
Combine fresh food, great taste, and love.
~Sunninghill Jill

Whether you are a seasoned cook, or one who rarely turns on the oven, you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to make a fresh start and enjoy better health and wellbeing. There is no magic or rocket science to making delicious dishes packed with nutrition. All it takes is a bit of planning, a tad more time, and a good sense of adventure!

In this book, I have combined everything I have learned about foods, flavors, and nutrition to create mouthwatering dishes that nourish the body and delight the taste buds. I have tested these recipes on some pretty picky eaters—kids, teenagers and adults. Everyone enjoys eating at my table. In fact, they often ask for seconds, or for the recipe!

Here is a Civil War story that explores life beyond the battlefield, one that tells a harrowing tale about one of the darkest times in U.S. history. Author Loyd Hoke left no stone unturned in his quest to complete a search begun by his grandfather, Lester Hoke. The Hoke family knew Lester’s grandfather, Ambrose, died during the Civil War but his body was never recovered. For years, Lester searched for his ancestor’s remains, but to no avail. Loyd, Ambrose’s great great grandson, continued the pursuit, searching the state of North Carolina, from Catawba County to Bald Head Island. Using family letters, state documents and his own gut instincts, Hoke discovered where his great great grandfather likely died. His story is heart-wrenching, one of deprivation, sickness and fear; but also one of great love.

While a junior at Davidson College, Alex McKeithen went to Europe to study
painting. A summer in the Tuscan sun, listening to U2’s Joshua Tree helped fuel his creativity. McKeithen’s inspiration exploded into full blown mania, however, when he reached Paris. Believing he is the seventh angel whose sole purpose is to announce the Apocalypse, McKeithen runs through the streets of Paris, leaving articles of clothing at various cathedrals until, completely nude, he is arrested at the Arc de Triomphe.

To his jailors, McKeithen will say only that he is the seventh angel. This ultimately lands him in Maison Blanche, an asylum near Paris where the food is surprisingly good and McKeithen is convinced God is communicating with him via messages on sugar packets.

With the help of his parents, he eventually returns to North Carolina and is admitted to Duke University’s Medical Center. Though the food there is nothing to write home about, he finds himself under the care of a doctor who correctly diagnoses his bipolar disorder and gently guides him back to sanity during late night visits clouded by cigar smoke.

McKeithen’s vivid and often humorous recollections of his journey from the
brink are paired with marginalized facts and figures demonstrating his state of excessive mental activity. His account of his own mental state, as well as observations of fellow patients and caregivers make for a riveting read.

Author of MUSIC OF 1000 HAMMERS, Inside Habitat for Humanity, Paul Leonard’s professional career has spanned the two disparate worlds of nonprofit ministry and big business. With degrees from Davidson College, University of Chicago’s Divinity School, and Emory University, he first served at Trinity Presbyterian Church and then founded a non-traditional church that focused on community action and service. While there, Leonard helped organize Charlotte Fair Housing Association.

He left the traditional ministry to work with M.O.T.I.O.N (city housing program), and was later recruited by the John Crosland Company, coming on board as the company’s multi-family housing manager. In this capacity,he utilized federal housing programs to build low- and moderate-income housing. He became the company’s president in 1984. After the company was acquired by Centex Real Estate Corporation, Leonard was appointed as its Executive Vice-President, responsible for the company’s southeast region.

After retiring from Centex, Leonard was elected to the Board of Habitat for Humanity International; he served as Chairman of the Board from December, 2001 to December, 2003. Leonard was employed as the Interim CEO of Habitat for Humanity from June, 2004 through October, 2005. Currently, he is a member of the US Council for Habitat for Humanity International.

A Centennial History of
The Mecklenburg County Bar

This centennial history of the Mecklenburg County Bar Association offers a fascinating and well-researched account of the legal profession in Mecklenburg County for the past hundred years, with flashbacks all the way to colonial times. But more than that, it provides, implicitly, a thoroughly intriguing history of the community. If you want to understand why Charlotte-Mecklenburg has been a special place – more progressive, more decent and civil – than many other communities its size, you should read this book.

Ten years in the writing, Suzanne Cameron Linder Hurley’s book on Hugh L. McColl Jr.’s family is on press. This painstakingly researched history is illustrated with beautiful photography by Jack Hurley, Keith Fergus and others, along with many archival images from the McColl Personal Collection.

This comprehensive account begins with the clan’s early years in Scotland and covers sixteen centuries of history, from Colla Uais, a fourth century Irish king, to the present day Carolina McColls. The first part of the book applies to all McColls (or McCalls) who can trace their families to Appin, Scotland. The second aspect of the story focuses on life in America from 1775 to 1870, between the American Revolution and the end of the Civil War. The last portion examines the post-war recovery of the New South, led by such men as Duncan D. McColl, Sr, his sons, and ultimately his great grandson, Hugh McColl Jr, under whose leadership, the Bank of America became one of the biggest, if not the biggest bank in the world.

The result is this indispensible guide to North Carolina’s cultural heritage – from general stores to barber shops to theatres. Beautifully photographed and accompanied by Lee Grant’s entertaining essays, each chapter offers a wonderful backward glance at the commerce and family enterprise that once existed in every North Carolina town.
