Authors Hunter Gourley and Jerry Shinn examine the life of a man who epitomizes the term “Servant Leader.” William (Bill) Frederick Mulliss never sought recognition for his far-reaching accomplishments. He led by example and did what was simply, in his words, the right thing to do.
This biography pays proper homage to a man who was instrumental in shaping many of Charlotte’s leading institutions, from healthcare to banking. Tirelesss in his efforts to improve a rapidly growing city, he championed change in a sometimes resistant atmosphere.
In addition to establishing one of North Carolina’s leading law firms, Mulliss was steadfast in his devotion to his alma mater, Davidson College, serving on the Board of Trustees and as general counsel. He showed similar dedcation to the Presbyterian Church, again serving on key committees on many levels within the Presbytery.
Bill Mulliss’s determination and rigorous self-discipline brought out the best in himself and those around him. His exemplary life continues to be an inspiration for others today.

- Larry Dagenhart
Bill Mulliss’s unspoken message to those who worked with and around him was to strive for an extraordinary level of excellence in everything we did. With partner Fred Helms, Mulliss built a firm on a sound foundation, a firm which ultimately developed into an institution that took on a character and culture of its own that was far greater than the sum of its parts.
